A Day in Darmstadt

Updated: Mar 29, 2021

A short drive from us in Bad Homburg, Darmstadt is a beautiful small town rich in history and beauty. It's easy to get around and there are plenty of things to occupy a family for the day.

After five months of German lockdown and homeschooling, spring has sprung and my need to see and do has kicked into high gear. Even though we can't travel overnight in our current lockdown, that doesn't stop me from day-tripping. This weekend was a big one for us, so I will start with Saturday. We took a quick trip to Darmstadt to visit Segmüller and saw a few sights while we were there. We only had two hours, so I wanted to see as much as our time would allow. Our first stop was Mathildenhöhe.

Mathildenhöhe is an amazing collection of architecture, history, art, and natural beauty. There is a museum, a Russian church, historical homes nearby, a beautiful tree garden, a breathtaking pool in front of the church...so much to see. Everything was closed, because of the lockdown, but it was still lovely to walk through and view the architecture, artifacts, garden, the Lily Basin and various other artistic structures.

I didn't find the Mathildenhöhe website until after our visit, and only then found out how much was actually part of the complex. My 4-year old enjoyed walk and took in the sights. My 10-year old loved the Tree Grove, the Russian Church, and Lily Basin. If you would like more information about Mathildenhöhe, here is the english version of the website: https://www.mathildenhoehe-darmstadt.de/en/mathildenhoehe/

Our next stop was the Vortex Garden. Read about our visit HERE
