All's Swell in Alsfeld

Sunday was a slow morning after our Saturday evening dinner party, but with the beautiful weather we had to go explore. Straying not far from Bad Homburg we decided to head northwest to the small village of Alsfeld. The village is definitely small making it's darling town center easy to find. Parking was easy and everything was a short walk. A necessity for our family and my diva toddler.

Our first stop was the church. An impressive sight cozied up against the half-timbered homes and businesses of Alsfeld's pedestrian area. It's beautiful glass windows sparkled in the sunlight and it's barred courtyard piqued the interest of our tween. Across from the chapel was a quaint walking path. Although short, it curved around small homes and businesses of the village. As we strolled we delighted in a mixture of old German architecture and the natural beauty of spring bursting from all directions.

At the end of the path we were greeted by an impressive tower with a stork nest perched on top. Beyond the tower we turned back toward the center of the village in awe of the rows of more beautiful German architecture. The cobblestone street led us to the pedestrian zone and the center of the village. Another church stood at the center along with gorgeous old buildings and restaurants. Although we didn't stop because of COVID restrictions, there were numerous restaurants around the city with lovely outdoor seating and a bustling atmosphere. The Kartoffelsack had plates filled with various types of potato, schnitzel, and salad--our mouths were watering. It might even be worth another trip to enjoy the sunshine, outdoor ambience, and delicious food.

With everyone eating around town our kids decided it was mandatory they do the same, even though we ate lunch before our trip. So, a quick stop for ice cream for my youngest, a sweet treat for my oldest, and pralinen for my husband and me was next on the agenda. We found the Markt-Cafe, which had it's own shop filled with sweet and savory delicacies. The ice cream, pastry, and pralinen were all delicious. With bellies happy everyone was in need of a restroom. Since restrooms are sometimes scarce here in Germany, I think it's an important tip to add. There is a WC right next to the main village square down a small street next to the museum. "WC" is painted on the side of a building and is easily seen.

After more meandering through the streets of this sweet town, the boredom grumbling began so we headed home. For us it was an easy hour drive on the Autobahn. This is a town I would recommend visiting on a Saturday as there are many cute little shops and boutiques to visit that are not open on Sunday.
